Nokia Recalls 14 Million AC Adapters

Posted by: irinem on: November 9, 2009

Anyone who bought a Nokia cell phone recently listen up: Nokia has just launched a recall program for certain Nokia-branded AC adapters.

“During a routine quality control process, Nokia identified a potential product quality issue with certain chargers manufactured by one of its third-party suppliers,” Nokia said in a statement. “The plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electrical shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket.”

No incidents or injuries have been reported, Nokia said.

Affected chargers include the AC-3E and AC-3U models, manufactured between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009; and the AC-4U model, manufactured between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009.

Mel Gibson’s partner has given birth to the couple’s first child together, a girl called Lucia.

Gibson’s publicist, Alan Nierob, confirmed Oksana Grigorieva, 39, gave birth on Friday.

Grigorieva, a pianist and songwriter, also has a teenage son with former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton.

Gibson, 53, already has seven children with estranged wife Robyn, who filed for divorce to end their 28-year marriage in April.

Gibson has said the pair split up three years ago and that he met Grigorieva in 2008 while filming Edge of Darkness.

The Oscar-winner revealed his girlfriend was pregnant on The Tonight Show earlier this year.

“When it’s all said and done, I did a pretty good hatchet job on my marriage myself,” he told Jay Leno.

“I’m to blame. If you’re inclined to judge, put it here.”

Google opens OneBox music service

Posted by: irinem on: October 29, 2009

Search giant Google has entered the online music market with a new service for finding and buying music online.

OneBox is an alliance with music sites Lala and MySpace-owned iLike.

The US-only service allows people to search using song titles, artists or using snippets of lyrics and will also stream sought-after tracks.

Mark Mulligan, an analyst at research firm Forrester, said the service may offer a compelling alternative to illegal file-sharing.

“Apple can do little about iPod owners downloading from BitTorrent,” he said in a blog post. “But Google on the other hand can.”

BitTorrent software is widely used to trade music and movies.

“Just imagine if when a consumer searches for a song, alongside all of those Torrent results is a heavily integrated Google music offering.”

When users search using OneBox a pop-up widget powered by iLike or Lala offers to play the entire song.

A MySpace box allows people to buy MP3s of the tracks and also highlights music videos and other information, such as upcoming concerts by the artists.

According to Google, the words “music” and “lyrics” are among the top 10 search terms of all time.

“At Google, we see millions of music-related queries every day,” said the company’s vice president of search Marissa Mayer at the launch in Los Angeles.

“It is clear to us that for our users music holds a very special and particular place.”

Apple currently dominates the online music market with around 70% of worldwide sales.

In Europe, firms such as Spotify are also beginning to gain popularity. The free music-streaming service ,which launched in 2008, now has more than two million users in the UK, and more than six million across Europe.

The new Google collaboration will hope to emulate the success of these services.

The firm already offer free downloads of licensed music tracks in China and has said it was now trying to find partners in other countries to take the new music model international.

Microsoft Cancels Windows 7 Family Guy Deal

Posted by: irinem on: October 28, 2009

Microsoft has decided that the subject matter in the Family Guy television show is too racy for its taste. On Monday, Microsoft said it’s pulling out of its sponsorship of the upcoming “Family Guy” special on the grounds that the show’s content “was not a fit with the Windows brand.”

Earlier this month, Microsoft revealed a sponsorship of the Family Guy special in which the show would run without commercials and instead weave in “unique Windows 7-branded programming.” Microsoft claimed that the Windows 7 content would “blend seamlessly” with Family Guy content, but the early clips were widely panned as uninteresting and funless.

The results of the decade-long Interphone study on cell phone safety are that heavy cell phone use increases the risk of developing brain tumors later in life.

The study, which focused on three types of brain cancer and tumors of the parotid gland, found a significant increase in cancer after a decade or more of cell phone use.

When a cell phone tower connects with a cell phone, electromagnetic radiation is created. When the cell phone is held against the ear, this radiation penetrates the brain.

According the Daily Telegraph in London, the World Health Organization (WHO) will soon publish the results of the Interphone study, which was conducted in 12 countries by the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC).

Head researcher Dr. Elisabeth Cardis told the Telegraph, “In the absence of definitive results and in the light of a number of studies which, though limited, suggest a possible effect of radiofrequency radiation, precautions are important. I am therefore globally in agreement with the idea of restricting the use by children, though I would not go as far as banning mobile phones as they can be a very important tool, not only in emergencies, but also maintaining contact between children and their parents and thus playing a reassurance role. Means to reduce our exposure (use of hands-free kits and moderating our use of phones) are also interesting.”

These results from the Interphone study follow closely on research published in the Oct 13 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which reviewed existing research on the association between cell phones and brain tumors. It found that when just the well-done studies were included, there was an 18% increased risk of brain tumors in cell phone users, and that they tended to occur on the side of the head that the cell phone was used most.

NASA App available for iPhone, iPod

Posted by: irinem on: October 27, 2009

The U.S. space agency says a free application is now available for iPhones and iPods that delivers videos and news updates about NASA missions.

“Making NASA more accessible to the public is a high priority for the agency,” said Gale Allen, director of NASA’s Strategic Integration and Management for Exploration Systems Mission. “Tools like this allow us to provide users easy access to NASA information and progress at a fast pace.”

The space agency said the application, available at Apple Inc. stores, collects, customizes and delivers an extensive selection of updated information, images and videos from various online NASA sources, officials said. For example, users can access NASA countdown clocks and Twitter feeds. It also allows users to track the current positions of the International Space Station and other spacecraft currently orbiting Earth in three views: a map with borders and labels, visible satellite imagery or satellite overlaid with country borders and labels.

Lindsay Lohan talks style

Posted by: irinem on: October 26, 2009

Lindsay Lohan is flattered people are still interested in her.

The former child star says she is used to being constantly followed by paparazzi and takes it as a compliment as it means she is still worth writing about.

The 23-year-old actress said: “I don’t notice it. There are times when it drives me nuts, but it’s been going on since I was 13. 10 years. I don’t know if I can change it. When I don’t give people opportunities to write something, they make something up. It’s flattering that they are that interested in me. They build you up to take you down.”

But when the media attention becomes too much, the ‘Mean Girls’ stars says she uses other celebrities to hide behind so photographers ignore her.
